A thematic note is not a big atomic note.

Its purpose isn't to say everything about a subject. It is to assemble a few atomic notes around an angle, a tension, or a pattern worth seeing as a whole.

Where an atomic note stabilizes a self-contained idea, the thematic note organizes a small constellation of ideas.

It answers a simple question: what do these notes, taken together, allow us to understand?

A Thematic Note Is a View, Not a Folder

The most common misreading is to treat the thematic note like a folder.

You create a page called Marketing, Product Management, Atomicity, Roadmap, then pile onto it everything that seems related to the subject. Very quickly, the note becomes an inventory: too long to guide, too general to think with, too heavy to reuse.

A thematic note has to stay more selective.

It doesn't gather every possible note. It chooses an angle.

For example, in a product context, a thematic note wouldn't just say:

The title changes everything. It doesn't merely name a subject. It proposes a reading.

What Is a Thematic Note For?

A thematic note serves, first of all, to reveal a pattern.

One atomic note might say:

Prospects don't always compare the product to a competitor, but to their current process.

Another might say:

A price objection can hide poorly contextualized value.

A third might say:

Messaging must connect the product's capability to the customer's real situation.

Each of these notes is useful on its own. But together, they can produce a broader thesis:

This is exactly the role of a thematic note: to surface a level of reading that doesn't exist in any single atomic note.

What It Contains

A good thematic note contains few things, but the right ones:

• a subject or a guiding question;
• a short synthesis;
• a few connected atomic notes;
• the important tensions or contradictions;
• sometimes a possible deliverable: article, outline, decision, campaign, pitch, roadmap.

It doesn't need to reproduce the entire content of the atomic notes. Rather, it should explain the relationship between them.

The thematic note doesn't replace the atomic notes. It puts them in conversation.

Difference From an Atomic Note

An atomic note must have a single conceptual center of gravity.

A thematic note can take on several ideas, provided they all serve the same angle of synthesis.

The difference is therefore functional:

• the atomic note stabilizes a building block;
• the thematic note organizes a small set of building blocks;
• the glossary stabilizes the words used in those blocks.

If a thematic note starts to develop a self-contained idea in depth, that idea should probably be extracted into an atomic note.

If it becomes a list of links with no synthesis, it is no longer a thematic note: it is merely a navigation table.

Why It Helps in Producing a Deliverable

A thematic note is often the link between the note system and writing.

It makes it possible to move from several scattered ideas to a possible outline.

In the context of the PM as context architect, for example, atomic notes might stabilize separate ideas:

• the ticket becomes an output of the product context;
• product memory must preserve the trade-offs;
• knowledge becomes an asset if it is accessible and reusable;
• an insights repository is worth as much as the link between raw material, themes, decisions, and evidence.

The thematic note can then assemble these ideas into a readable thesis:

The PM becomes a context architect when the ticket stops being the center of product work.

This note becomes almost an article outline. It doesn't contain the whole article, but it provides the intellectual architecture that will make it possible to write.

The Right Definition

A thematic note is a light synthesis that assembles several notes around a useful angle.

It is neither a folder, nor an encyclopedia, nor an overly long atomic note.

It serves to reveal a pattern, a tension, or a line of argument from several units of thought.

A good thematic note is a temporarily stable view onto a network of notes.
