A thematic note is not a big atomic note.

It isn't there to say everything about a subject. It is there to bring a few atomic notes together around an angle, a tension or a pattern that is worth seeing as a whole.

Where an atomic note pins down a self-standing idea, a thematic note organises a small constellation of ideas.

It answers one simple question: what do these notes, taken together, let you understand?

A thematic note is a view, not a folder

The most common misreading is to treat a thematic note as a folder.

You create a page called Marketing, Product Management, Atomicity, Roadmap, then pile onto it everything that looks related to the subject. Very quickly the note turns into an inventory: too long to guide you, too general to think with, too cumbersome to reuse.

A thematic note has to stay more selective.

It doesn't gather every note it could. It chooses an angle.

In a product setting, for instance, a thematic note wouldn't simply say:

# Customer context

It would argue something more like:

# Customer context becomes an asset when it connects signals, decisions and evidence

The title changes everything. It doesn't just name a subject. It offers a reading.

What is a thematic note for?

A thematic note is there, first of all, to make a pattern visible.

One atomic note might say:

Prospects don't always compare the product to a competitor, but to the process they use today.

Another might say:

A price objection can hide value that was badly contextualised.

A third might say:

Messaging has to connect what the product can do to the customer's real situation.

Each of these notes is useful on its own. Together, though, they can yield a broader thesis:

That is exactly what a thematic note does: it brings out a level of reading that no single atomic note holds.

What it contains

A good thematic note holds few things, but the right ones:

• a subject or a guiding question;
• a short synthesis;
• a few atomic notes linked together;
• the tensions or contradictions that matter;
• sometimes a lead on a deliverable: article, outline, decision, campaign, pitch, roadmap.

It doesn't need to repeat everything the atomic notes say. What it should do is explain how they relate to one another.

A thematic note doesn't replace atomic notes. It puts them in conversation.

Difference from an atomic note

An atomic note must have a single conceptual centre of gravity.

A thematic note can carry several ideas, as long as they all serve the same angle of synthesis.

So the difference is functional:

• an atomic note pins down a building block;
• a thematic note organises a small set of building blocks;
• the glossary pins down the words used in those building blocks.

If a thematic note starts developing one self-standing idea in depth, that idea probably needs pulling out into an atomic note.

If it turns into a list of links with no synthesis, it is no longer a thematic note: it is just a navigation table.

Why it helps you produce a deliverable

A thematic note is often the link between a note system and writing.

It lets you move from several scattered ideas to a possible outline.

Take the PM as context architect, for instance: atomic notes can pin down separate ideas.

• the ticket becomes an output of the product context;
• product memory has to keep the trade-offs;
• knowledge becomes an asset if it is accessible and reusable;
• an insights repository is only as good as the links between raw input, themes, decisions and evidence.

The thematic note can then bring those ideas together into a readable thesis:

The PM becomes a context architect when the ticket stops being the centre of product work.

That note is almost an article outline. It doesn't contain the whole article, but it gives you the intellectual architecture to write it.

The right definition

A thematic note is a light synthesis that brings several notes together around a useful angle.

It is neither a folder, nor an encyclopedia, nor an overlong atomic note.

Its purpose is to make a pattern, a tension or a line of argument visible from several units of thought.

A good thematic note is a temporarily stable view onto a network of notes.
