Main idea

A one-pager asks questions that look elementary: what problem are we addressing, for whom, what promise are we making, which priority comes before the others, by what main criterion will we know we have succeeded. The exercise rarely stumbles on phrasing. It stumbles on the fact that you have to choose a single main problem, one priority target, one central promise, one dominant criterion for success.

The failure then reads as a diagnosis. A team that cannot write the target does not have a writing problem: it has not chosen among several markets it serves a little. A team that cannot formulate the promise discovers that product, market and distribution are not telling the same story. A team that cannot name a main criterion discovers that several definitions of success are competing inside it.

The opposite reflex — handing the page to someone who writes well, or reworking it until it passes — removes the symptom and leaves the cause. It produces a readable page about which nobody can say what it excludes.

Why it matters

This changes what to do with a framing document that is stuck: the blockage is not a matter for a writing workshop, it should be escalated as a decision that has not been taken.

It also works as a cheap prior test: having the page written before committing to a project reveals in a few hours a disagreement execution would take months to surface.

Nuances and limits

The symptom is not specific. A page that will not get written can also signal that the subject is still being explored, and that there is legitimately nothing to settle for now.

And some writing difficulties are real: formulating a promise in one sentence is a craft, and its absence in the team can mask an otherwise clear strategy.
