Main idea

The temptation is constant and it feels like efficiency: when writing an article, turning the idea straight into a sentence; when preparing a deck, into a slide bullet; when writing a specification, into a requirement.

At that moment, the note is no longer a note. It is a fragment of the deliverable under way, filed in the wrong place. It has taken on the tone, the segmentation and the level of detail of one particular output, and it can no longer be re-expressed differently without being undone first.

A note must therefore stay at a level where it remains re-expressible: it can hold a distinction, a piece of evidence, an assumption, a trade-off, a nuance — but not the form of the document of the moment.

Why it matters

This is the most common way to destroy a knowledge layer without noticing, because the gesture looks like good work: you advance on the deliverable and on the notes at the same time.

The consequence only appears later, when another output has to be produced and the available material is already slanted. At that point the note no longer saves time: it imposes its choices.

Nuances and limits

A note can quote a formulation validated for a given audience, provided it presents it as such and not as the formulation of the idea.

And the boundary is sometimes thin: a neutral rephrasing is still a rephrasing, so already a choice. Neutrality is a direction, not a reachable state.
